"Patients Benefit
When Professionals Work Together."
Undulation
exercises were noted as an aid to chiropractic care in
an article entitled
"Fluid Movement Facilitates the
Chiropractic Adjustment" published
today in Dynamic Chiropractic.
The article was co-written by Kimberly Kohr, DC, a
chiropractor from North Bend, WA
and Anita Boser, LMP, CHP, a structural integration
practitioner and author from Issaquah, WA.
Patients
ultimately benefit when health professionals work
together. Anita Boser developed undulation exercises,
which improve mobility of the spine, from her training
as a structural integrator, a discipline that aligns
the body's muscles and fascia and teaches people to
move in ways that support alignment. Chiropractors
restore joint mobility, spinal alignment and function
of the nervous system most commonly through manual
manipulation.
These
modalities complement each other and can result in
better patient outcomes when combined. Carrie Babcox,
DC of Issaquah Family Chiropractic endorses the
combination, "Undulations are an excellent and fun way
to get the patient engaged in their own body awareness
and treatment." She notes that a patient with chronic
back pain noticed improvements after following a
prescription of 45 minutes of daily undulation.
"Simply getting the patient to get up and walk every
45 minutes wasn't enough, but getting her to undulate
helped her progress more quickly and reduce the
irritation she was feeling."
Health care
services that previously were considered alternative,
such as chiropractic, massage and acupuncture, are
becoming more main stream.
The
National Institutes of Health's National Center for
Complementary and Alternative Medicine
reports that 4 in 10 Americans seek care
from alternative sources and that chronic pain is the
number one reason people turn to these sources.
As the
nation focuses on health care reform and staggering
health care costs, new, effective strategies will
become more popular. Jill Massengill, DC of Straight
Chiropractic in North Bend notes improvement in her
patients that practice undulation. "These exercises
create strength and flexibility in the spine. By doing
the exercises at home, my patients are empowered to
take charge of and improve their health without extra
expense."
